When I took her to the doctor for her two-year well visit last week, she weighed 27 lbs, 6 oz, was 34 inches tall (!!!) and her head was 48.5 cm in circumference. By far, her height was the most startling measurement to me. I was not prepared for her to be nearly three feet tall. She doesn't look like she she's nearly three feet tall. She still looks wonderfully elfin to me. But the nurse was not even remotely surprised to be reading the measurement off the tape. Go figure.

two, part one.
Well, the first week of age two has been pretty much delightful. Nothing terrible about it, I'm glad to say (whilst knocking wood). We got Ellie an easel for her birthday, and she loves it. I, in turn, love the washability of a certain brand name's art supplies. She's been diligently working on a Valentine for my mom and mother-in-law for the last couple of days. She's identified the various greens in the upper right corner as a rainbow, and the blue patches on the middle and lower right as trees. Actually, these pictures are fairly early stages; there's now a veritable forest of blue and green trees all over the easel. My little Lorax.
When the doctor and I were talking about Ellie's progress, I mentioned that she knows the alphabet, counts up to 20, and counts backwards from 10. (I forgot to say she's got her colors down and identifies shapes correctly most of the time.) "I have no frame of reference for how normal that is," I said. "Well, it's not," said the doctor. Apparently most two year olds haven't quite grasped the entire alphabet, and, she said, "you hope they can count to 20 by the time they're in kindergarten." So. The doc thought my idea of starting to teach Ellie some French was a good way to keep her stimulated. I guess we'll venture into some low-key efforts to teach reading and in a few months, maybe a little math, as well. I don't want to force her development, but I want to keep her brain active and learning. Seems like a balance we'll just have to strike one day at a time.
