Birthday of the Teensy One

Ellie's birthday started for me the night before, when I came home from a Superbowl party to cook for almost five hours. I needed to cook ahead, since I had to work on her birthday, although happily I got to take a half-day so I could make the cake and other dishes that required fresh preparation.

I wanted to have a smorgasbord of her favorite foods, including fruit salad with bananas, apples, and strawberries; mini black bean burgers topped with guacamole and fresh cilantro; a ginormous batch of potato leek soup; roasted red pepper hummus and garlic hummus with whole wheat and white pitas; orzo salad with tomatoes, roasted red peppers (she loves them) and peas; and four-layer strawberry cake with the lightest, fluffiest chocolate frosting you've ever tasted.

Why, yes, I do express my love through cooking. Why do you ask?

We had a fantastic party at our local pub (owned by Ellie's surrogate grandparents), with about forty of our friends there. Ellie got a big kick out of pulling the tissue paper out of her gift bags, and enjoyed the presents, too. By the time we got home, we were all pleasantly exhausted.

We've all had a fun day today, too, playing with her new toys and reading her new books. Tonight as she fell asleep while nursing, with one of her legs sticking straight up in the air as is her wont, I started to realize how much I'll miss snuggling her to sleep. Now that she's a year old, the time for weaning her off of co-sleeping approaches ever faster. I think the BB speaks the truth when he darts it'll be harder for me than for her. Until it comes, I'm savoring our co-sleeping all the more.
